Midfielder due to leave Cheltenham to ease wage bill

Exeter City are in talks to sign Cheltenham Town midfielder Alex Russell on loan. Russell joined Cheltenham on a two-year contract last summer, but is set to move on to help trim the League One strugglers' wage bill. The 35-year-old was wanted by Exeter at the same time he chose to join Cheltenham and is looking forward to the switch to St James Park. "I spoke to Exeter last summer and they were very keen, so I know what they are all about," Russell told the Gloucestershire Echo. "They are doing well in the league and maybe they want to strengthen for the final promotion push, but it all augurs well. "I have some good friends there too like Marcus Stewart and Ryan Harley and I have taken an interest in them this season because of that and the interest they showed in me." Russell has made 27 appearances for Cheltenham, but missed Tuesday night's defeat at home by Millwall due to an ankle injury.
