Macclesfield defender James Jennings is unlikely to play again this season after undergoing scans on a knee injury.
The 21-year-old has missed the Silkmen's last three games with the problem and may be forced to sit out their 12 remaining fixtures as well.
A trip to a specialist on Tuesday has confirmed the youngster's worst fears, with a lengthy spell on the sidelines now lying ahead of him.
"There were some anomalies on the original scan which required a second opinion," Macclesfield physio Nick Reid told the club's
official website.
"The specialist has confirmed that there's nothing untoward and it is a grade two medial lateral ligament injury.
"JJ is therefore looking at anywhere between six to nine weeks to recover. Given the end of the season is only eight-and-a-half weeks away there's an outside chance he could be back but at this stage it is more unlikely he will. But we certainly haven't given up hope.
"His leg will be immobilised for the next week and then it will be a case of building up the strength as the ligaments repair."
