Werder Bremen chairman Juergen Born has quit the club in the midst of fraud allegations.
Chairman denies allegations of fraud
Werder Bremen chairman Juergen Born has resigned from his position after fraud allegations were brought against him.
Stories in the German media have linked Born with financial dealings involving a Peruvian players' agency. It has been alleged that he gained money at the expense of the club.
Born has protested his innocence but will step down as chairman to avoid any further controversy.
"Given I am the object of reports linking me with financial transactions with the Peruvian company 'Image' I will bring forward my planned resignation," he told the club's
official website.
"I can assure you I have never gained any illegal financial advantages at the expense of Werder Bremen but to prove this needs some time and I want to protect the team from such an unnecessary burden."
Werder Bremen's supervisory board believe Born had to resign to prevent a conflict of interest within the club.
"This was the right decision," said supervisory board chairman Willi Lemke.
"We must, for the good of Werder, create the necessary transparency in this case."
Werder won the league and cup double under Born in 2004 and currently sit 10th in the German Bundesliga.
