Rutemoeller confirmed as Iranian coach

Iran have appointed German Erich Rutemoeller as interim coach following the sacking of Ali Daei. Rutemoeller had just signed a one-year deal with the Iranian Football Federation last December to serve as an advisor to the national team, but Daei's departure has unexpectedly fast-tracked the 64-year-old into the top job. The former Germany assistant manager told Bild the handover went smoothly, but admitted he has no idea how long he will remain in the role. "Everything was done rather quickly after Ali Daei was released, but I am not sure how long I will be staying here," he said. "He brought me into Iran to help him. Unfortunately he is no longer part of the setup so my future is not as clear. "Furthermore I do not speak the native language." Iran are currently in danger of missing the World Cup finals next year after a series of poor results in qualifying games so far. Rutemoeller's first task will be to obtain a respectable result in a friendly against Senegal in Tehran this Wednesday.
