Swede accepts away results were not good enough

Sven Goran Eriksson is disappointed he will no longer be able to coach Mexico at the 2010 World Cup finals after being sacked. The former England boss was dismissed due to their poor away form in their efforts to feature at the 2010 World Cup finals, form that sees the nation fourth in the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. Having already lost 2-0 away to USA in February, Mexico were defeated 3-1 away from home by Honduras this week, forcing president Justino Compean's patience to snap. Eriksson, who has been linked with a Premier League return with Portsmouth this season, has admitted his sadness at not being able to coach Mexico in South Africa next summer. "We had a meeting this morning and the president of the Mexican federation told me that my job was over," explained Eriksson on Sky Sports News.

Regret

"From a personal point of view I regret it, since I like the job. I like the whole country. I like its people. "The president told me today that the reasons for my sacking were the results abroad and I can't argue against that. "We've lost two games in this qualifying round against the USA and Honduras. That's how things stand. "I understand that sooner or later the patience of your people and the federation would end. I feel sad because I always thought I'd be sitting on Mexico's bench at the World Cup."
