I've been to Old Trafford twice this week to see Manchester United's Champions League draw with Porto and their remarkable 3-2 win over Aston Villa. That result means United have taken 80 points from a possible 102 against Villa in the Premier League and have remained unbeaten against them in the last 27 league games. Sunday's result was the 20th victory in that spell and their overall record against the Midlands club reads: Won 24, Drawn 8, Lost 2. Villa's last win against United was in August 1995 when Ian Taylor, Mark Draper and a Dwight Yorke penalty saw off United 3-1 at Villa Park - United's consolation coming through a certain David Beckham, scoring his first goal for the club. Villa's only other win was in the first ever Premier League season when a Dalian Atkinson goal gave them a 1-0 win at Villa Park in November 1992. The result was another example of the 'all or nothing' nature of Villa's away record this season. Extraordinarily, Villa have had no away draws in their 16 away games. They have won 10 and just need one more from their remaining three away fixtures (at Bolton, Fulham or Middlesbrough) to equal the club's top-flight record of 11 away wins in a season - set in 1896/97. However, in their six away defeats they have conceded a total of 17 goals and according to our friends at Opta, of the 39 goals they have conceded this season they are still to concede direct from a corner. In any case, they have lost 12 of their last 13 Premier League games against United, but at least stopped the rot of five consecutive doubles thanks to the 0-0 draw at Villa Park earlier this season. They are still to win at Old Trafford in the Premier League, and have only won one league game there in the last 54 years. I was there when Peter Withe scored twice in a 2-1 win in November 1983. So as I said on Sunday, it was a customary win for United over Villa - but it was not achieved in a customary manner! TWO AT MAN UDear Martin. Manchester United have now conceded two or more goals at home in the Premier League three times this season (Hull, Liverpool, Aston Villa). Is this a Premier League record? We hardly ever let in goals at home. Jay Portus (Man Utd fan). MARTIN SAYS: It is unusual to see Manchester United concede goals, especially when they go in front as they did against Liverpool and Aston Villa. But this season is not a record just yet. Back in 1996/97 they conceded two or more goals at Old Trafford in five league games - a 2-2 draw with Everton, a 2-2 with Blackburn, a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea, a 3-2 defeat to Derby and a 3-3 draw with Middlesbrough. There have been two seasons where four opposition sides have hit more than one Premier League goal at Old Trafford. Most recently in 2003/04, Fulham, Everton, Southampton and Middlesbrough all scored two or more at the Theatre of Dreams. The same thing happened in United's treble-winning season of 1998/99 when Leicester, Blackburn and Leeds all lost 3-2 at Old Trafford and Middlesbrough won 3-2 there. The team to have scored two or more at Old Trafford the most often is Chelsea, managing it six times in the Premier League era. Liverpool are the next best, having achieved that feat on three occasions. After the success of Liverpool and Porto, and the near success of Aston Villa and Hull, perhaps a few more teams will go to Old Trafford and take the initiative, instead of sitting back. CHARGE OF THE LATE BRIGADE
Hi Martin. What an amazing weekend it was in the Premier League. I've never know so much late drama. It got me wondering abut late goals. How many times have Liverpool scored in the last 10 minutes of games compared to Manchester United. I'm assuming one of those two teams has scored the most late goals - I'd also like to know which team has scored the fewest. Gilbert, Manchester. MARTIN SAYS: I've taken a look at how many goals each team has scored between the 80th minute and the final whistle - and Liverpool come out on top with 14 goals in the last 10 minutes. However, they are joint top with Arsenal who have also netted in the last 10 minutes on 14 occasions. Federico Macheda's injury-time winner against Villa was Manchester United's 11th Premier League goal in the last 10 minutes of a game. Interestingly, Blackburn and Everton have also netted late on 11 occasions this year. The teams with the fewest number of goals in the last 10 minutes are Portsmouth and West Ham with just four each. It is interesting to note that third-placed Chelsea are only just ahead of them in our list - only six of their 51 league goals have come in the last 10 minutes of games. However, they have scored some late goals that stick in the mind, including Frank Lampard's 90th-minute winners against Stoke and Wigan. Here is a list of how many goals each Premier League team has scored in the last 10 minutes of games this season: Arsenal, Liverpool (14)
Blackburn, Everton, Man Utd (11)
Aston Villa (10)
Man City, Stoke City, Tottenham (9)
Newcastle, Sunderland, Wigan (8)
Hull, Middlesbrough (7)
Bolton, Chelsea, West Brom (6)
Fulham (5)
Portsmouth, West Ham (4) A BRIDGE TO CROSS
Hi Martin. I've just finished watching Liverpool v Chelsea and I'm in a state of shock. Where did that result come from? Can you give us Liverpool fans any hope of scoring the three goals we need to go through? When was the last time we scored three against Chelsea - and more importantly when was the last time we did it at Stamford Bridge? Andrew Hill, Merseyside.
MARTIN SAYS: The last time the Reds netted three or more against the Blues was in the Premier League back in 1997 when they won 4-2 at Anfield. I was at that game and it must be remembered that Bernard Lambourde was sent off early for the Blues. Robbie Fowler scored one, while Patrick Berger scored a hat-trick - becoming one of only four Liverpool players to net three in a game against Chelsea (the others were James Stewart in1910, Fred Pagnam in 1915 and Gordon Hodgson in 1930). As an aside, no Liverpool player has ever scored a hat-trick at Stamford Bridge.
To answer your question, the last time Liverpool bagged three at Stamford Bridge was back on December 16 1989 when they won 5-2. Peter Beardsley, Ian Rush (2), Ray Houghton and Steve McMahon were on target for the Reds - and it remains Liverpool's biggest ever win at Chelsea's ground. You probably won't need reminding that was also the last time Liverpool won the title.FIRST LEG-UP?Hello Martin. I am a Man United fan from Egypt, and although the Champions League draw made United avoid the likes of Barcelona and Liverpool, I am worried about playing our second leg in the quarter-finals away from home. It will be the same in the semi-final. I can't remember United advancing in the Champions League when playing the second leg away since the Juventus tie in 1999, am I right ? How does this compare to the other big clubs in Europe? Mohamed Elkholy MARTIN SAYS: You are correct, the last time Man United played at home in the first leg of a Champions League tie and went through was all the way back in the 1999 semi-final when they beat Juventus. That year they also played Inter Milan at home in the first leg of the quarter final and won.
Since then they have played four knockout matches at home in the first leg and failed to progress on each occasion. They have been drawn away from home in the first leg on nine occasions in the last 10 years, progressing seven times. The last time they played a second leg at Old Trafford and lost was in the 2003/04 season when Jose Mourinho's Porto famously snatched a last-gasp winner.
Unless they go through with a high-scoring draw or a penalty-shoot-out, United will have to do what no other English team has ever done - and win a European game against Porto in Portugal. Their European record against English clubs reads P12, W5, D7, L0, F16, A5. However, they have never won on English soil in 13 attempts. In fact they have only drawn two of those 13 games - both at Old Trafford.
However, United's stats are not rare. Of the 40 quarter-final ties to have been played in the last 10 Champions League seasons, 23 of the winners played the second leg at home. On two occasions (2007/08 and 2001/02) all four of the semi-finalists played the second leg of their quarter finals at home.
Here is a table to make things a little clearer:
| Season | Number of teams to progress when playing second leg away. |
| 2007/08 | 0 |
| 2006/07 | 2 |
| 2005/06 | 1 |
| 2004/05 | 3 |
| 2003/04 | 2 |
| 2002/03 | 3 |
| 2001/02 | 0 |
| 2000/01 | 1 |
| 1999/2000 | 2 |
| 1998/99 | 3 |
Hi Martin, I was wondering how many goals scored by English Clubs in the Champions League this season have been by English players? Aashman, London MARTIN SAYS: Hi Aashman. English clubs have scored 57 goals in the Champions League so far this season, including this week's quarter finals, with 15 of them coming from the boot or head of an Englishman - so more than a quarter of the goals scored by Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Man Utd have been by English players. The highest scoring English player in this year's competition is Steven Gerrard with six - but he is Liverpool's only English goalscorer. Only one Englishman (Theo Walcott) has scored for Arsenal and only one (Wayne Rooney) has scored for Man United. But Chelsea boast three English scorers in John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole. The stats break down as follows: Arsenal:
Goalscorers: Adebayor (4), Van Persie (3), Gallas, Walcott, Diaby, Song, Ramsey, Bendtner
Total goals: 13
Scored by Englishman: 1 (7.7%) Chelsea
Goalscorers: Drogba (4), Anelka (2), Terry (2), Ivanovic (2), Lampard, J Cole, Malouda, Kalou, Essien.
Total goals: 15
Scored by Englishmen: 4 (26.6%) Liverpool:
Goalscorers: Gerrard (6), Keane (2), Torres (2), Kuyt, Babel, Riera, N'Gog, Benayoun, Dossena.
Total goals: 16
Scored by Englishmen: 6 (37.5%) Man Utd:
Goalscorers: Rooney (4), Berbatov (4), Tevez (2), Giggs, Vidic, Ronaldo
Total goals: 13
Scored by Englishmen: 4 (30.8%) FORWARD THINKING
Hello Martin, Today I read a report crediting Arsenal manager Mr Wenger proposing bonus points for each game you win. He would like to see teams get: "Three points for the victory as now, then extra points for your positive goal difference." How would the league table look if Wenger's plan was introduced? Don.
MARTIN REPLIES: I do not know the exact idea that Arsene Wenger was proposing, but I can answer your question. If teams earn three points for a win, then bonus points for their positive goal difference (e.g. 1 bonus point for a 1-0 win, two for a 3-1 win etc), the Premier League table would look as it does below.
Taking the results of the season so far, Chelsea would have collected the most bonus points (42) lifting them above Liverpool into second place. This idea would also put Everton above Aston Villa in sixth and Man City would leap from 10th to 7th. The biggest beneficiaries would be Sunderland, who would climb four places from 17th to 13th, but the bottom three of Newcastle, Middlesbrough and West Brom would be unchanged.
| Team | Current Points | Bonus Points | Total |
| Man Utd | 68 | 39 | 107 |
| Chelsea | 64 | 42 | 106 |
| Liverpool | 67 | 37 | 104 |
| Arsenal | 58 | 31 | 89 |
| Everton | 51 | 25 | 76 |
| Aston Villa | 52 | 22 | 74 |
| Man City | 38 | 28 | 66 |
| West Ham | 44 | 19 | 63 |
| Wigan | 41 | 17 | 58 |
| Fulham | 40 | 17 | 57 |
| Bolton | 37 | 19 | 56 |
| Tottenham | 38 | 16 | 54 |
| Sunderland | 32 | 15 | 47 |
| Blackburn | 34 | 12 | 46 |
| Stoke | 35 | 11 | 46 |
| Portsmouth | 33 | 12 | 45 |
| Hull | 34 | 10 | 44 |
| Newcastle | 29 | 9 | 38 |
| Middlesbrough | 27 | 8 | 35 |
| West Brom | 24 | 9 | 33 |
