Playmaker hopes for City switch

Alex Russell is confident he has done enough to secure a permanent deal with Exeter City. The Cheltenham Town midfielder has been on loan with the Grecians since February after Cheltenham were forced to farm out a number of players to stay out of administration. Russell, who turned down the chance to move to Exeter in the summer of 2008 when he agreed a two-year contract with the Robins, is now hoping for a permanent switch to the Devon club "As far as I'm concerned I'd like to come down, but it's a case of sorting things out between the two clubs," the 36-year-old told the Gloucestershire Echo. "Obviously I've still got a year left at Cheltenham so I'll have to wait and see.

Injury

"Apart from the injury I've loved my time at Exeter and enjoyed being part of the squad." Russell featured in seven games before picking up a medial knee ligament injury in the 2-2 draw against former club and fellow promotion candidates Rochdale at the end of March. Russell is now back in full training and hopes to be able to play a part in Exeter's push towards one of the three automatic promotion places. "We're in a good position, in good form and I think that confidence is a really important thing to have going into the final games," he added. "The best thing about it is that promotion is in our hands and you can't ask for any more than that with two games to go."
