Spanish strugglers sack manager with five games to go

Getafe have sacked manager Victor Munoz after a 2-1 home defeat to UEFA Champions League chasing Villarreal at the weekend. The result leaves the club just one place and one point above the drop zone with five games remaining. The club's board have decided to act swiftly after what was the club's third defeat in a row, while Getafe's last 13 games have only brought about two wins. Despite their precarious league position and dismal run of results, Los Azulones sporting director Toni Munoz has declared that he does not have another manager lined up. "Nothing about the next coach is known yet, but we expect to be able to announce something soon," he said.

Thanks the club

Munoz, who was told his services were no longer needed after training on Monday, insists that he could have turned the team's fortunes around. "I told them that one more game would solve things, but they were determined and so released me," he added. "I have to thank the club for the confidence that they showed in me this term. "The majority (of the squad) have had a professional attitude. Now I have spoken to them and told them all to do everything they can."
