Macclesfield Town

Sky Sports is launching a survey to find out the best player ever to wear a Macclesfield shirt - and we would like you to get involved. We are asking fans of each of the 92 English League teams and 12 Scottish Premier League sides to nominate their all-time favourite footballers. Perhaps you remember the days of Wilf Hall. The legendary goalkeeper made his debut in 1963 after joining from Ipswich. Hall went on to play for the Silkmen for nine years where he was never booked. After his playing days were over Hall worked for the club for 40 years in numerous roles. Or will you go for Sir John Askey as he is affectionately known to Macclesfield fans? At home on either the wing or through the middle Askey holds the club's overall appearance record with 672 between 1984-2003, scoring 155 goals in the process. What about the recent glory years under Sammy McIlroy in the late 90s when the club climbed from the Conference to their highest ever position of League One. Nigerian international Efe Sodje, man-mountain Darren Tinson and midfielder Neil Sorvel all starred during that time. Are they worthy of your vote? Maybe you'll go for the goalscoring exploits of Steve Burr. The striker was prolific in his five years at the club and will be forever remembered for his hat-trick against then Third Division Rotherham in the second round of the FA Cup where a crowd of 4,500 people saw the Silkmen, then of the Conference, run out 4-0 winners. And what about midfielder Steve Wood? Again another member of the Conference side of the 90s and early Football League days 'Woody' would put his body on the line for the Silkmen cause while also chipping in with a number of important goals. To make your selection please complete the form below and tell us why you are putting your chosen nominee forward. Once we have received all your nominations, we will narrow down the selections for each side to the 10 leading candidates. You can then vote for your personal favourite. After all votes are cast we will reveal the winners ahead of the 2009/10 season and crown the Macclesfield Town's greatest-ever player!
