Blues boss reveals bid for Germany-bound Reds stalwart
Alex McLeish has revealed Birmingham made an unsuccessful bid to lure Sami Hyypia to St Andrews.
McLeish has been busy preparing a squad for next season's campaign following last weekend's promotion to the Premier League and the Blues boss has already begun hunting for new faces to bring to City.
The Birmingham manager was extremely keen to acquire the experienced services of Hyypia - having tried to land the big Finn several times on loan - but the Liverpool defender instead opted to cash in on a lucrative move to Bayern Leverkusen.
McLeish told
The Birmingham Mail: "We tried for Sami Hyypia. He's the type of centre-half I believe we need. But it wasn't to be."
Meanwhile, McLeish looks set to be priced out of a move for Doncaster Rovers' Matt Mills.
The defender attracted interest from the Midlands club in January and it was thought the 22-year-old could be Birmingham-bound in the summer.
But Rovers' £5 million asking price appears to have poured cold water on a potential switch as McLeish is unlikely to fork out that kind of figure for a player without top-flight experience.
