New Czech boss targets World Cup finals

Frantisek Straka has vowed to do all he can to help Czech Republic qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals after being named head coach. The Czech's woeful start to World Cup qualifying - results that see them placed fourth in Group 4 behind Northern Ireland, Slovakia and Poland - saw Petr Rada sacked. Straka is thrilled to be named national coach of his country, although he wishes the job had come about under different circumstances. The 50-year-old, who won 35 caps for Czechoslovakia, has vowed to do his best from the Czech's remaining group games to help them secure a place in South Africa next summer.

Dream come true

"It's a dream come true but it's not about me," Straka told CTK. "I can promise that I will do all I can. "What is of importance is to get the national team out of the difficult situation in qualifying."
