Real lose grip on title, Sevilla & Depor held
Barcelona claimed the Primera Liga title after second-placed Real Madrid fell to a 3-2 defeat at Villarreal.
The defeat saw Real lose their grip on the Spanish title after two successive successes with Barcelona crowned champions for the 19th time in their history.
Villarreal got off to a cracking start when Robert Pires fired the home side in front on 17 minutes with a rare header.
Real came out of the blocks for the start of the second half and Rafael van der Vaart drew the visitors level two minutes after the break.
Cani restored Villarreal's lead just past the hour mark with a drilled finish, but Real refused to lie down and substitute Gonzalo Higuain drew Juande Ramos' side level two minutes from time.
But there was still time left for Villarreal to grab a winner when Joan Capdevila capitalised on a mistake by Iker Casillas to score.
The win keeps alive Villarreal's hopes of securing a Champions League berth next season.
Sevilla missed the chance to cement their place in third spot after being held to a goalless draw by struggling
Osasuna.
Both sides hit the woodwork with Javier Flano striking the crossbar for Osasuna and Luis Fabiano heading against the bar for Sevilla.
Sevilla midfielder Koffi Romaric was sent off eight minutes from time for a second yellow card before Osasuna defender Sergio Gonzalez was dismissed in the closing stages.
The draw moves Sevilla move five points clear of Valencia in fourth in
their bid to secure the third automatic Champions League qualification place.
Meanwhile,
Deportivo La Coruna remain on course for a European place after a 1-1 draw with
Getafe at La Riazor.
Roberto Soldado gave Getafe the lead a minute after the break, but former Getafe striker Ivan Riki came back to haunt his old club with an equaliser five minutes from time.
