Italian admits he could have been persuaded to stay at Real

Fabio Cannavaro has revealed that he could have been persuaded to stay at Real Madrid, but the turmoil this season saw him tempted back to Juventus and now he wants to play in the World Cup Finals. The Italian central defender played his last home game for Los Merengues on Sunday evening and received a rapturous send-off after three years at the Santiago Bernabeu. Madrid may have maintained a title push on the pitch, but the chaos behind the scenes when president Ramon Calderon resigned meant that Cannavaro was not given the chance to talk about a new deal. "I waited for a long time for someone to tell me something and nothing happened but that's life," he said. "It's not easy to leave Madrid and I would have preferred something else. But I think I am returning to Italy in a calm frame of mind. "I am going back to Juve now but I think that everyone in Madrid knows that I have worked hard to defend this badge and this shirt." With a move back to Juve decided, Cannavaro is now hoping that he can impress in Serie A and earn a place in the Italy World Cup squad in a year's time. "The most important thing for me now is to get to the World Cup at my best level," he continued. "Juve is a team I know very well. I am happy," he added. "Hearing all the people calling my name tonight was amazing. I wish everyone here good luck for the future."
