1960: Born Northumberland, 31st December.
1979: Makes first-team debut for Gillingham against Blackpool. Gains an England 'B' cap and eight England youth caps.
1984: August - Moves from Gillingham to Norwich for £125,000. Scores own goal on home debut in 3-3 draw with Liverpool.
1985: Member of Norwich team which wins the Milk Cup with 1-0 victory over Sunderland but suffers relegation to Division Two.
1986: Norwich win Second Division title.
1987: May - Norwich finish fifth in Division One.
December - Joins Manchester United for £800,000.
1990: United beat Crystal Palace 1-0 in a replay to win FA Cup.
1991: Wins European Cup Winners' Cup after 2-1 victory over Barcelona.
1992: Wins League Cup after 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
1993: Wins Premier League title.
1994: Wins championship and United beat Chelsea 4-0 in FA Cup final to take the domestic double.
1995: United finish second in league and are beaten 1-0 by Everton in FA Cup final.
1996: United crowned champions but Bruce misses 1-0 FA Cup final win over Liverpool.
June - Moves on free transfer to Birmingham.
1998: Joins Sheffield United as player-manager.
1999: February - Withdraws his players from the pitch during an FA Cup tie at Arsenal over a row in which Bruce claimed the ball should have been returned after being kicked out due to an injury. Arsenal win the game 2-1 but offer Sheffield United a replay, which they lose 2-1 again.
May - Resigns over lack of resources.
May - Joins Huddersfield as manager.
2000: October - Dismissed after one win in 11 games.
2001: April - Joins Wigan.
May 29 - Leaves Wigan.
May 31 - Joins Crystal Palace.
November - Leaves Palace having been placed on 'gardening leave' by Selhurst Park chairman Simon Jordan following interest from Birmingham.
December - Joins Birmingham.
2002: Birmingham beat Norwich 1-0 in the play-off final to win promotion to the Premiership.
2003: Birmingham finish 13th in their first season in the Premiership.
2004: Birmingham finish 10th.
June 29 - Signs five-year contract with Birmingham.
September - Turns down the chance to join Newcastle as successor to Sir Bobby Robson. Birmingham reward him with an improved five-year contract.
2006: March - With Birmingham floundering in the relegation zone, they are also emphatically dumped out of the FA Cup after a humiliating 7-0 home defeat by Liverpool in the quarter-final.
April 29: A 0-0 draw at home to Newcastle on the same day as Portsmouth win at Wigan sees Birmingham relegated to the Championship.
Oct: Fans turn on Bruce after a 1-0 defeat to Norwich sees the club slip to ninth in the Championship.
2007: May 6 - A 1-0 defeat at Preston allows Sunderland to win the Coca-Cola Championship title but Birmingham were already guaranteed promotion back to the Premier League.
October 18 - Bolton are refused to permission to speak to Bruce as they seek to replace sacked manager Sammy Lee.
November 16 - Birmingham give permission for Wigan to speak to Bruce about succeeding the sacked Chris Hutchings.
November 18 - Appointed Wigan manager, with his new club paying £3million in compensation. Deal is briefly put on hold but is completed on November 23.
2008: January 11 - Wigan sign little-known Honduran Wilson Palacios for a small fee.
May 3 - Wigan secure their Premier League survival with a 2-0 win at Aston Villa.
2009: January 21 - Wigan sell Palacios to Tottenham for £12million, and also sell striker Emile Heskey to Aston Villa for £3.5million after running the risk of losing him for nothing in the summer. Bruce signs Colombian striker Hugo Rodallega.
May 24 - Wigan finish 11th in Premier League.
June 2 - Introduced as Sunderland manager, signing a three-year contract.
