Managerial hopeful would make Aberdeen the Arsenal of the north

Noel Whelan claims he could mould Aberdeen into the Arsenal of Scottish football if he was appointed as their new manager. The 34-year-old is looking to get back into the game after retiring in January 2007 while with Dunfermline. The former Leeds United striker had a season as a player at Pittodrie, where he scored five goals in 20 league appearances in helping the Dons to fourth in the table. Aberdeen are currently on the look-out for a new boss after Jimmy Calderwood departed by mutual consent, despite leading the club into Europe last season. "Arsenal would be my blueprint for Aberdeen," he told the Daily Record. "I'd make them play. I'd make them good to watch and hard to beat." Whelan has promised to bring in former Manchester United, Aston Villa and Coventry boss Ron Atkinson as his assistant if he was appointed.
