Romania gain vital win away to Lithuania

Serbia marched on at the top of Group 7 as Romania got back in the race to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals. A Nenad Milijas penalty earned Serbia a 1-0 home win over Austria to move them five points ahead of France at the top of the standings. The decisive goal arrived after just seven minutes when Wolves target Milijas converted from the spot after Austrian keeper Michael Gspurning had brought down Danko Lazovic. Austria came closest to an equaliser early in the second half when Stefan Maierhofer's cross struck defender Neven Subotic on the line. Serbia were forced to replace Nemanja Vidic at half-time after the Manchester United defender picked up a leg injury. Romania gained just their second win of the qualifying campaign after a battling 1-0 victory away to Lithuania. Cristian Chivu was narrowly off target with a long-range strike for Romania before Ciprian Marica broke the deadlock on 39 minutes. The striker fired home from the edge of the area to earn the win that, despite keeping Romania in fifth position, leaves them just three points behind second-placed France.
