Williams giving regular words of encouragement to injured Murray
Legendary Wolves keeper Bert Williams is helping injured Matt Murray on his road to recovery.
The 28-year-old ruptured his patella tendon while on loan at Hereford last November and was forced to undergo surgery in a bid to repair the damage.
He has since had to have a clean-up operation to repair an area of tendon that was healing slower than expected, meaning he will now miss the start of the club's Premier League campaign.
But Murray's spirits are being kept up by Williams, who made 420 appearances for Wolves after the Second World War, winning both the league title and FA Cup and earning an England call-up.
Murray told the club's
official website: "Bert has always looked out for me ever since I was coming through the ranks as a young lad.
Phones regularly
"He's always been great for getting in touch and asking how I am and phones me regularly for a chat.
"When he read about the clean-up operation he gave me a call to wish me all the best and has since called back and was pleased to hear I was feeling a lot more positive.
"He's just told me to carry on doing my work and said he's looking forward to seeing me back playing again."
But Murray will not be setting any targets after undergoing a similar process to that experienced by Wolves' defender George Elokobi on his way back from a serious cruciate knee ligament injury.
He added: "I come out of the brace next Wednesday and go back to see the surgeon at the end of July.
"I'm back in doing a bit of work at the moment but hopefully after that I can really start stepping things up again.
More positive
"George had a similar thing done on his recovery and it helped him so while I was a bit down at first I'm far more positive now.
"Of course I'm gutted not to be ready for pre-season and getting on the tour of Australia and starting to think about challenging for a place had been my target.
"But I'm not putting any pressure on myself now in terms of setting a date or anything.
"I can't afford to push myself too much - making sure it's all done properly is the main thing and when I'm ready, I'm ready.
"It's certainly going to be an exciting season and one I'd love to be involved in at some stage."
