Brazil march on while America crash out

A Brazilian masterclass proved too much for USA on Thursday as they slipped to a 3-0 defeat. The victory, coupled with a 4-3 success over Egypt in their opening game, should be enough to send Dunga's side cruising into the semi-finals - depending on the result of Italy's meeting with Egypt - while the Americans crash out having suffered back-to-back defeats. Brazil's dominance was not evident during the opening exchanges, with the USA holding their own against illustrious opposition. However, there were only seven minutes on the clock by the time Felipe Melo fired the South Americans in front and started the procession. He was allowed to rise unmarked inside the area and made no mistake as he met a perfectly weighted free-kick from Maicon to power a header past Tim Howard.

Counter

On 20 minutes Brazil the doubled their advantage as they countered with blistering speed and, following good work by Ramires, Manchester City schemer Robinho tapped home from close range. America's unenviable task was then made all the more difficult on 57 minutes when Sacha Kljestan became the second USA player in as many games to be dismissed after he hauled down the dangerous Ramires. It did not take Brazil long to make their numerical advantage count, as just five minutes later a wonderful flowing move involving Kaka, Ramires and Maicon resulted in the latter lifting the ball over Howard from the tightest of angles. The final stages saw the men in yellow continue to dominate proceedings, with the party tricks brought out to entertain the crowd. Brazil will now round off their Group B fixtures against Italy on Sunday, while a disappointing tournament for America will come to a close against Egypt.
