Icelander shuns Boro to stay put

Hermann Hreidarsson has signed a new contract with Portsmouth, turning down the chance to move to Middlesbrough. The 34-year-old Icelander was out-of-contract at Fratton Park this summer, but he will now remain for at least a further 12 months. Relegated Middlesbrough were keen to add his experience to their squad, whilst Celtic and Rangers were also considering bids. But Hreidarsson has now pledged his future to Portsmouth - who he joined in 2007 - by agreeing a new one-year deal. "Me signing with Portsmouth again was always going to happen even though I had many other options," he told Morgunbladid. "Me and my family feel great in this place, we have been there for two fun years and I think I have plenty more in me to play in the Premier League and that had a lot to say in this decision. "Middlesbrough showed me most interest and also Celtic and Rangers but that did not go as far. "Portsmouth promised me, as far as they could, that they want to strengthen the team for next season and that their goal is to keep doing well in the Premier League."
