Real Madrid's general director Jorge Valdano has confirmed the club are no longer trying to sign David Villa.

Valdano to turn sights towards another striker

Real Madrid's general director Jorge Valdano has confirmed the club are no longer trying to sign David Villa from Valencia. Villa had been a leading target for Real following Florentino Perez's election as president and he was widely expected to move to the Santiago Bernabeu. However, following talks over a possible transfer, Valencia have stated the striker is not for sale after he was also linked with Chelsea and Manchester United. Valdano revealed Real have accepted the stance from their Primera Division rivals and will now look elsewhere to bring in a new striker. "The situation with Villa is 100 per cent finished," said Valdano. "There was a call from president to president in which Valencia told us that Villa was not for sale. "We understand that we need to go for an alternative and that is what we are working on." Villa is currently playing for Spain at the Confederations Cup, but has admitted the constant speculation over his future has led to a 'dreadful' week.
