Striker pens new deal

Giuseppe Mascara has put an end to speculation about his future by signing a contract extension with Catania. The striker had been linked with a move away from Sicily, with clubs from Italy and abroad understood to be interested. Manchester City and Villarreal were both thought to be monitoring his progress, while Napoli were reportedly leading the chase. However, the 30-year-old has now accepted Catania's offer of a new deal and committed himself to the club until 2013. New manager Gianluca Atzori, meanwhile, has outlined his ambitions for the new season. He hopes to avoid relegation and improve on last season's 15th-placed Serie A finish. "They are both possible objectives, our group has improved," Atzori told Datasport. "We will work very hard to make our fans happy."
