Saints to offer new deal to striker
New Southampton boss Alan Pardew is hoping to offer a contract to striker Stern John.
The Trinidad & Tobago international is currently a free agent after seeing his previous deal with the Saints expire at the end of June.
He is, however, still training with the South Coast club, playing in Tuesday's friendly defeat against Salisbury, and Pardew admits he is keen to tie the experienced frontman down on new terms.
"Stern played and as the game wore on he got more and more into it and more effective. He is not fit but I am trying to do a contract for him," Pardew told
The Echo.
"I think it would be good for Southampton, I think it would be good for me and for the club.
"He has made it quite clear he wants to stay and I'm pleased about that because I think he'll be important for us.
"His strength and his ability if you look at his goals to games ratio all suggest he will get goals in this division and I certainly think that."
