Striker completes switch to Stade Gerland

France international Bafetimbi Gomis has completed a move from St Etienne to Lyon. The 23-year-old striker has signed a five-year contract at Stade Gerland, with a fee of €13million (£11.1m) having changed hands for his services. Lyon have been looking to bolster their attacking options for some time, with Karim Benzema and Fred having departed the club this summer. The capture of Gomis takes their transfer window spending spree past €70million, with Lisandro Lopez, Michel Bastos and Aly Cissokho already acquired. Gomis is delighted to have joined one of Ligue 1's biggest clubs and believes the switch will improve his chances of making the French squad for the 2010 World Cup - should they qualify. "It is in the corner of my mind, as is the case with all professional players," he said of next year's showpiece in South Africa. "But I'll first stay concentrated on the results of my club. Lyon possess a very good squad with a lot of internationals so if we perform, the rest will follow."

Confidence

Gomis is also hoping to bring the French title back to Stade Gerland, with Bordeaux having prised the crown out of Lyon's hands last season for the first time in eight years. "I have come here to win the title back for Lyon," he added. "This is one of the six or seven biggest clubs in Europe. I wanted to come here several seasons ago but it wasn't able to happen. "I thank the president (Jean-Michel Aulas) and the staff for putting their confidence in me. I've made the choice with the goal of making the step up. It was the best choice."
