John Jacobs fears a lack of goals might stop Wycombe achieving their aim of consolidation this season.
Can Chairboys get the goals to stay in League One?
After a nail-biting promotion and an equally nail-biting summer, John Jacobs will be happy with consolidation this season. But can Wycombe deliver?
So after the most sublimely ridiculous and yet meekly magical promotion in the history of Wycombe Wanderers, the mighty Chairboys are finally back in League One.
It took a fantastic last-gasp, last-day defeat to Sven's new Notts County and the most nervous few minutes of any Wycombe fan's life waiting for the results from Bury's match to trickle through, followed by jubilation on the pitch - and in the stands.
But finally, Wycombe had clinched promotion and after all that excitement of the final day came a summer full of optimism and joy. We're in League One! Hurrah! We've got Charlton away first! Hurrah! Our managing director wants to buy us completely and sell our ground or else we're in administration! Hur- Oh wait.
Since the sudden bombshell from Steve Hayes, signings have dribbled in through the Adams Park doors in dribs and drabs, and Steve succeeded and bought the club outright. But no point dwelling on the disappointing things. The most exciting things having occurred in the way of players look to have come from what we've already got here.
Emergence
Tommy 'Far Too Good For League One' Doherty signing a new contract, Matty 'Wonderkid' Phillips following suit and the potential emergence of last season's signing Jon Paul Pittman, who next season should be looking to climb to the top of the League One goalscoring charts and if he can, I think we will be in healthy shape.
The pick of the new signings looks to be Michael Duberry, a name most football fans will know, and filling in beautifully, as well as taking the armband from, the recently departed David McCracken. Lets not mention where he's gone.
Looking to next season, the plan will no doubt be to consolidate, and stay in League One. In my opininon, a very achieveable goal. It's no secret that once again, Wycombe will need goals. We struggled last year with them but our defensive capabilities took us up, and the back four still looks solid, so it all comes down to if we bang in enough goals at the other end.
Carl Cort's come and gone on trial, Scott McGleish has left permanently for Leyton Orient, leaving us relying on two unknown entities in Stuart Beavon and JP Pittman - and two strikers who didn't set the world alight in League Two in Matt Harrold and Chris Zebroski.
Threatening
The key in the past has been that we've not had enough goals from midfield and that problem has not been remedied yet with the signings made. None of the three midfielders purchased - Lewis Montrose, Ian Westlake or Stuart Green have great goalscoring records, so clearly someone will have to step up or be brought in.
Maybe in a league with a little more time on the ball and a full pre-season under his belt, Matt Bloomfield can finally realise some of the potential that he's been threatening to produce for a long time. We'll all just have to wait and see.
And it won't take long to either. In a couple of days, Wycombe Wanderers will be lining up against the same team they played on a magical night in the Carling Cup quarter final - Charlton, recently relagated from the Championship and only a few season ago, sitting pretty in the Premier League.
And if that wasn't scary/exciting (delete as applicable) enough for you, the next League game welcomes one of English football's biggest names to Adams Park - Leeds United - followed a week later by a trip to Carrow Road to play Norwich's Canaries.
It's an incredible and exciting start to the campaign and one in which Wycombe will really find out where they stand in this league. At least for the first time in a while we don't start bottom. Thanks Yeovil!
Enjoy the ride.
