Lampard and Carvalho delighted with victory

Frank Lampard and Ricardo Carvalho believe it was important for Chelsea to start the new season with a victory over Manchester United. The Blues beat United on penalties to claim the Community Shield after an enthralling 2-2 draw at Wembley. Chelsea looked set to win in normal time until Wayne Rooney's late leveller, and Lampard was delighted with the way his team-mates regained their focus in the shoot-out. "This is sweet. It feels nice to make a winning start to the season," the midfielder told Sky Sports 2. "After that last goal we could have been on a downer but we didn't let out heads drop."

Deserved

Carvalho echoed fellow goalscorer Lampard's sentiments and gave a positive assessment of Chelsea's performance. "The win means a lot. It's important to win trophies and start with a win," said the Portuguese defender. "But now we have to look to the Premier League and start winning there as it's important to get a lead. "It wasn't a good start but after that we controlled the game and I thought we deserved to win. We conceded in the last minute but came back and won on penalties."
Fair goal
There was some controversy about the Lampard goal that put Chelsea 2-1 ahead, with United upset that play had not been stopped moments earlier when Patrice Evra collided with Michael Ballack and went to ground. Lampard believes it was a fair goal, adding: "Anyone should look at the rules. It's up to the referee to stop it but United just stopped when their man was down. "It's in the rules, when the referee stops it he stops it. We carried on and I'm sure United would have down the same in that position."
