Image: Showunmi: a welcome return with a goal!

Leeds frontmen Jermaine Beckford and Enoch Showunmi have divided FanZoner Dave Guile's opinion already.

Do the right thing Beckford, welcome back Showunmi

Leeds made it two wins from two in the Carling Cup on Monday and Dave Guile was delighted with the goalscorer. But he is still to be won over new keeper Shane Higgs... and old friend Jermaine Beckford...

Two games, two wins and a first clean sheet for new boy Shane Higgs, whose impressive pre-season campaign seems to have won him a starting place. While I wish him well I've got to admit I'm disappointed for Casper Ankergren. Yes, I accept that he flaps at the odd cross and, like his ghostly namesake, occasionally has solid objects (like the ball) pass through his body, but he's looked much-improved under Simon Grayson and has been arguably our best player in the play-off games. Here's hoping that Higgs can step up to the plate as well as Casper has done at the business end of the season. I notice that not everyone is particularly enamoured with some of the comments I wrote about Jermaine Beckford in my last column. After all, his goalscoring achievements have been a shining light in the gloom that has surrounded our club in recent years. Even that stupid elbow that left the Millwall goalie with a concave face was almost worth the three-game ban, if only for the hysterical reaction it provoked from the Millwall-supporting columnist Rod Liddle, who spent the next five weeks milking the first time his team has ever had the moral high ground. But let's look at the bigger picture. How will we remember Jermaine five years down the line? The likes of Martyn, Kelly and Radebe are not best remembered for moments of individual brilliance (althought Kells' wondergoal against Wigan will live long in the memory) but for the years of service and obvious love for the club that they have continued to show in the years after their departures.

Deprived

Remember a chap called Lee Bowyer? Or Harry Kewell? If Beckford continues to run his contract down he will ultimately be remembered in the same memory as these two, who we took to our heart when they played for us, but who ultimately deprived the club of vital funds when our existence was under threat. If Jermaine wants to stay, as various sources keep telling us, he needs to come out and say it himself without hiding behind that odious Nick Rubery bloke who seems to be making all his decisions for him. If he commits to us, he will be a hero again. Until then, he needs to remember what shirt he's wearing... bruv. On a more positive note, I'd like to welcome big Enoch back to the fold after his life-threatening illness, and thank him for the heartwarming moment inspired by that toe-poked finish against Darlington. It will be remembered fondly, as will that comedy miscue a few minutes later. You can almost see the thought process on his face, as he controls the ball, prepares to shoot, and then remembers he's already scored his quota for the season and slices it wide, defying about five laws of physics in the process. Stephen Hawking could have hours of fun trying to work this guy out. But then again, when has anything about Leeds United been straightforward? Is Shane Higgs better than Casper Ankergeren? And is Dave right to take this stance on Beckford? And how pleased were you to see Enoch back with a goal? Join in the FanZone debate by filling in the feedback form below...
