Carlisle edge past Morecambe

Carlisle booked their place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy thanks to a 4-2 penalty shoot-out win at Morecambe after a 2-2 draw at the end of 90 minutes. The Cumbrians trailed 2-1 with just two minutes to go when Graham Kavanagh levelled the scores with a close- range header to set up the spot-kick finale. It was Greg Abbott's side who kept their cool with Ian Harte, Kevan Hurst, Tony Kane and Gary Madine all scoring. For the home side Dave Artell and Henry McStay slotted home but Mark Duffy and Wayne Curtis both saw efforts saved by Adam Collin. In normal time, Morecambe took the lead through Garry Hunter on three minutes before Kavanagh equalised three minutes after the break. The home side took the lead for a second time with a Curtis lob after 56 minutes and were heading for the next round until former Republic of Ireland international Kavanagh headed past Scott Davies in the dying moments.
