Striker picks up knee problem

Mario Gomez was forced out of Germany's training session on Sunday after picking up a knee injury. The Bayern Munich striker was on target for his country in a 2-0 friendly success over South Africa on Saturday and is in contention to face Azerbaijan on Wednesday. With vital World Cup qualifying points at stake in midweek, Germany boss Joachim Low will want to have his strongest possible side available. Gomez is now doubtful, though, after complaining of pain in his right knee while being put through his paces. He has received treatment on the area in question and has not been ruled out of the Azerbaijan clash as yet. While the setback for Gomez has come as a blow to Low's plans, he has been impressed by the progress made by his side in recent games.

Fluid

"My team did well both in terms of result and performance," said Low, who criticised his side last month after they struggled to a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan in Baku. "That was a clear improvement in relation to our last few games, we were more fluid on the ball. "We have been together for a week now and you could see the benefits of the extra training. "There are still a few things which don't fit into the way we play. "There is still some room for improvement in defence, Arne Friedrich and Heiko Westermann put in good claims for their centre-back places. "Our structure has improved greatly."
