Ajax held by Timisoara as Anderlecht win in Zagreb
Ajax made a disappointing start to their Europa League campaign as they were held to a goalless draw by FC Timisoara, while Anderlecht won 2-0 away to Dinamo Zagreb.
Martin Jol's
Ajax had been looking to pick up three points from their home game against Romanian outfit
Timisoara but they endured a frustrating night in Group A.
Ajax dominated possession and had the better of what chances there were, but could not find a way past Timisoara goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon.
The closest they came was when Siem De Jong let fly from just outside the penalty area in the 21st minute but fired just wide of the upright.
Victor Bernardez and Jonathan Legear struck late on for
Anderlecht in the other Group A match to put the Belgian side in pole position.
Dinamo Zagreb outplayed Anderlecht for long periods but the tide turned with the arrival of torrential rain midway through the second half.
Bernardez opened the scoring after 74 minutes when his scuffed, long-range free-kick crept in, and Legear wrapped up the win by finishing off an 89th minute breakaway.
