David Beckham is close to finalising a return to AC Milan as he looks to secure his World Cup place.
Midfielder eager to keep his place in England squad
David Beckham has confirmed he is close to finalising a return to AC Milan as he looks to secure a place in England's World Cup squad.
The experienced midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Milan before returning to play in Major League Soccer with Los Angeles Galaxy.
England coach Fabio Capello has warned Beckham that he must be playing European football over the coming months to have a chance of featuring at the World Cup.
And the former Manchester United star is now set to rejoin Milan after ruling out a return to the Premier League following a link to Tottenham Hotspur.
Marvellous time
"There are other options available, but none that will stop me going to Milan," Beckham told the
Mail on Sunday.
"It is close to being finalised.
"When I left, they said they wanted me to come straight back. I had such a marvellous time there. They are a great club.
"Harry Redknapp has been incredible about me, but I've always said since I left United that to play for another English club would be difficult."
The 34-year-old remains determined to be in Capello's squad for next summer's World Cup in South Africa as he seeks a fourth appearance in the finals.
He added: "It's been important for us to qualify and for me to keep my fitness and stay in every squad.
"I've been lucky to be part of this campaign and be successful. I've been lucky enough to play in three World Cups and, hopefully, I'll be part of the squad, but I know I have to work hard, respect my fitness and then it's up to the manager.
"If I'm part of that, it will be amazing. If I'm not, I know he's honest enough to pick the best team to be successful."
