Veteran striker joins struggling Darlington

Darlington manager Steve Staunton has signed experienced striker Noel Whelan on a non-contract basis. Staunton takes charge of his first match on Saturday when the Quakers make the testing trip to Dagenham & Redbridge. The North East outfit are currently bottom of the Football League with just two points from their opening 11 matches and are already in danger of being cast adrift. Former Leeds, Coventry and Middlesbrough striker Whelan goes straight into Staunton's squad with Darlington desperately in need of a change in fortunes. Whelan began taking his coaching badges after an Achilles injury ended his brief stay with Dunfermline in summer 2007, and he returned to playing with Harrogate Town in December last year.
