Wales v Liechtenstein preview

Wales will be keen to end their World Cup qualifying campaign on a high note away to Liechtenstein.

Toshack's men look to end group on winning note

Wales will be keen to end their miserable World Cup qualifying campaign on a high note away to minnows Liechtenstein. John Toshack's troops had real expectations of reaching South Africa next summer, but it has proved another false dawn for the nation. Wales have performed well against Group Four's favourites, however, they have consistently struggled versus lesser opposition. Defeats home and away against Finland ensured Wales missed out on third spot, while they hover just five points clear of Azerbaijan. Wales can at least end their campaign on a winning note against a nation with just two points and two goals to their name.

However, they will have to do it without star striker Craig Bellamy, as he is suspended after picking up a yellow card in last weekend's defeat by Finland. Toshack is sweating over the availability of Arsenal's teenage midfielder Aaron Ramsey, who is struggling with a back problem. Ramsey, who played the full 90 minutes against Finland, has not had a full game for Arsenal this season and Toshack is against pushing him to start with question marks lingering over his fitness. If Ramsey misses out on the Rheinpark Stadium clash then Swansea City's Ashley Williams could revert from defence to midfield. Wayne Hennessey, like Bellamy, is suspended while Aston Villa's in-form central defender James Collins will become Wales' fourth qualifying captain when he leads the team out.

Local hero Mario Frick believes the international minnows can add Wales to their list of scalps on Wednesday. "If we do beat Wales, it will be the best win in our nation's history," he said. "The best at the moment was when we beat Iceland, but Wales are bigger than Iceland." Frick was suspended for Saturday's disappointing 2-0 home defeat by Azerbaijan and will be restored for the visit of Toshack's men. Head coach Hans-Peter Zaugg will be without Zurich midfielder Martin Buchel through suspension, while defenders Michael Stocklasa and Franz-Josef Vogts are both injured. Midfielder Michele Polverino is also a doubt with a muscle strain. Possible Wales team: Myhill, Gunter, Collins, Nyatanga, Bale, Edwards, Vaughan, Williams, Bradley, Vokes, Easter
