Argentina legend Ossie Ardiles gives his views on controversial manager Diego Maradona. Argentina scraped their way into the World Cup finals next year after substitute Mario Bolatti hit a later winner to give Diego Maradona's men a 1-0 win over Uruguay. However Ardiles, who was in the Sky Sports studios to watch the match earlier in the week said it was very uncomfortable viewing. "It was quite difficult to watch and we should never have been in that situation," said Ardiles on Goals on Sunday. "It is such a big sport and the amount of big names we have got and the amount of talent on hand - well it is incredible that we had to wait for the last ten minutes to qualify. It is horrendous really. "There are a lot pf problems in the team but I am very relieved that we are in the World Cup. Now that we are in the world cup we are going to be very difficult for everybody." Ardiles, who became a cult hero at White Hart Lane between 1978 and 1988, said that there was too much in-fighting within the camp, and that Maradona had to sort out the problems asap. "We are fighting far too much between ourselves," added Ardiles. "The press is incredibly anti Maradona in Argentina and he does not accept any criticism. All the time there are more and more problems. In the World Cup we are going to be fighting against very strong opposition like Brazil, England and Spain - so we can't fight with ourselves. "When Diego took over things started to go really, really wrong. We lost three games in a row which is unthinkable and one of those was against Bolivia. I believe he has the knowledge - he played with the best in the world and he was the best but he was always surrounded by the people he wanted to be with and I don't think they are the best people to have around him. "For example he could choose the best coach in Argentina to help him but he did not, he chose his friends. "I think Diego will be the manager of Argentina for the world Cup but he needs to have a big critique and face up to all he has done wrong. "It is not so difficult to get Argentina right. One year ago we were ranked no.1 in the world and playing superb football. The personal is there but some of his selections have been incredible to put it frankly. We have Messi, who for me is the best player in the world, but they play in a way where he hardly touches the ball."
