Livorno part with coach

Serie A strugglers Livorno have parted company with under-fire coach Gennaro Ruotolo. No wins from nine fixtures in the Italian top flight this season has left the club bottom of the table and has forced president Aldo Spinelli into drastic action. Ruotolo led Livorno to success in the Serie B play-offs last season but did not hold the necessary coaching licence to manage in the top tier. For that reason he had been assisted this term by Vittorio Russo. However, the pair have struggled to adapt to the rigours of life in Serie A and a change of tact is now required. "I'm really sorry but Livorno comes before everything and a change was needed," said Spinelli.

Candidate

Early reports suggest former Parma and Empoli coach Luigi Cagni is the favourite for the post. He has admitted to holding an interest in the role should Russo also be relieved of his duties at Stadio Armando Picchi. "At this stage I can only say that I confirmed to president Spinelli my willingness to accept this challenge," said Cagni. "Now it is up to him and his staff to decide whether I am the right man for the job."
