Brighton have sacked manager Russell Slade with the Seagulls struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Hinshelwood placed in caretaker charge

Brighton have sacked manager Russell Slade with the Seagulls struggling at the wrong end of the League One table. Slade, who has only been at the helm of the Withdean Stadium outfit for eight months, helped the club beat the drop last term. But a difficult start to the season, which sees Brighton only out of the drop zone on goal difference, has seen the former Yeovil boss pay the price. Martin Hinshelwood has been placed in caretaker charge, with Steve Brown and Charlie Oatway acting as his assistants, as Dean White and Bob Booker have followed Slade out of the exit door. Slade departs having won just nine of his 31 games at the helm and told the club's official website: "I am extremely sad that things have not worked out - but we have parted on good terms. "I felt we were progressing through a much-needed and vital rebuilding proves that was never going to be easy with the large turnover of players during the close season. "Whoever the club appoints will inherit a squad with enormous potential and an extremely supportive fan base. The supporters have been first-class throughout my time here - and I would like to place on record my thanks to them."

Chairman Tony Bloom felt he had no option but to make a change, although he was keen to pay tribute to Slade's efforts in the closing stages of last season. He added: "It is not a decision we have taken lightly and one taken with a heavy heart. "Russell is a good man - which made it an even harder decision to take - but it is one which has been made in the club's best interests. "Like all Albion fans, I am extremely grateful for Russell's achievements at the end of last season, as he kept us in League One against the odds." Slade's final match in charge was Saturday's 3-3 home draw against Hartlepool, with his temporary replacement Hinshelwood's first challenge the FA Cup first round clash away at Wycombe on Saturday.
