Geoff Shreeves wonders whether Lassan Diarra might just have added fuel to the Republic's fire...
Irish eyes are smarting thanks to Diarra's verbal volley
Republic of Ireland fans -and those of us who have backed them to reach the finals - should be this morning thankful to Frenchman Lassana Diarra, for a timely team talk and rallying cry ahead of the game in Paris.
It is not remotely important that we have an exact transcription of exactly what the Real Madrid midfield player said to Keith Andrews or indeed the veracity of any claim regarding comments he made, which were apparently along the lines of "**** off, Irish p*****. You are out."
It wouldn't have mattered if he had said "Bad luck old chap, rotten luck with the goal, mind you long way to go, only half time", because the most important and irrefutable fact is whatever he said, it gave the Irish the 'ump. Big style.
It would have been easy for Irish eyes to be downcast rather than smiling after a home defeat in the first leg but now as well as showing all their pride, professionalism and patriotism for the next game, they have anger too.
The power of which should never be underestimated especially when you consider that their opponents are already under massive pressure to qualify with a coach who could well be dismissed, whatever the result.
Don't forget only a freak goal separated these two at the weekend. A price of 7/1 for the Republic of Ireland to go through is a massive price and is probably a realistic reflection of the technical qualities the two sides have but it does it take into account expectation, fear and anger? Worth a little dabble, I think.
After the internationals the most interesting game is Liverpool against Manchester City. Given Mark Hughes' side have come out level in their last five games then the draw at 12/5 most look the form bet.
City have drawn twice in their last three league visits to Anfield too. Liverpool could well have that desperate 2-2 draw at home to Birmingham in their minds and need a convincing result. Evens to overcome the light blue half of Manchester is neither generous or unfair in my eyes.
For all those who believe that Rafa Benitez's side have lost their way irretrievably this season, perhaps now is the time to back them at 4/5 to finish fifth or lower.
Now if you like long odds then your eye will be drawn to Wolves who are a whopping 18/1 to overturn league leaders Chelsea at The Bridge. Looking at Chelsea's home record, I make the bookies right!
