Hughes spot-kick sinks Gills

An late penalty from Jeff Hughes earned Bristol Rovers a win over Gillingham in a game ruined by the weather.

Rovers move to just outside the play-offs

An 81st-minute penalty from Jeff Hughes earned Bristol Rovers a 2-1 win over Gillingham in a game ruined by the weather. Hughes placed his spot-kick low past goalkeeper Simon Royce after Matt Fry had been penalised for handball on the byline. Chris Lines had fired Rovers in front from 10 yards after 16 minutes only for Andy Barcham to conjure up a fine 40th-minute equaliser, curling home a right-footed shot from 25 yards. A strong wind and torrential rain made life difficult for both teams in a match of few clear-cut chances. Royce made second-half saves from Danny Coles and substitute Darryl Duffy, but there was little to choose between the sides. By the end the players were slithering in all directions on a saturated surface.
