North End lead hunt for defender
Skysports.com understands Preston and Sheffield United are battling it out to sign Coventry defender Elliott Ward before the close of the loan window.
Coventry are willing to let Ward leave after bringing in Richard Wood from Sheffield Wednesday last week.
The 24-year-old has previously admitted he was resigned to leaving the Ricoh Arena after failing to agree a new deal.
Ward's current deal expires in the summer and Coventry would rather offload him now rather than risk losing him for nothing at the end of the season.
Notts County failed in a loan bid for Ward last week, but Preston and Sheffield United have registered an interest in the former West Ham man.
Preston are understood to be favourites for the player and are hoping to agree a loan deal with a view to a permanent switch for the central defender.
