The defender has struggled to hold down regular first-team football at Pompey since moving to the South Coast from Watford in September.
He had been linked with a possible return to Vicarage Road during the January transfer window, with the Hornets able to offer him the opportunities he craves.

The Magpies have now made the first move, with manager Chris Hughton keen to further bolster his defensive options.
