Newcastle have offer accepted by Pompey
Sky Sports News understands Newcastle have seen a bid for Mike Williamson accepted by Portsmouth.
The defender has struggled to hold down regular first-team football at Pompey since moving to the South Coast from Watford in September.
He had been linked with a possible return to Vicarage Road during the January transfer window, with the Hornets able to offer him the opportunities he craves.
Skysports.com also told of how Newcastle were
tracking his services earlier this week.
The Magpies have now made the first move, with manager Chris Hughton keen to further bolster his defensive options.
The 26-year-old, who has also turned out for Torquay and Wycombe, will hope a move to the North East will help to reignite his career.
Newcastle currently boast the meanest defence in the Championship, with just 16 goals conceded in 25 games.
