Professional Footballers' association announce nominees for Players' Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year

It has been another season to remember for Chelsea striker Drogba as he and his team-mates have closed in on a first Premier League title since 2006. The 32-year-old seems to have gone about his work quietly in comparison with previous campaigns, but at the time of writing his 25 league goals put him only one strike behind Wayne Rooney. When he is on his game, Drogba is unplayable and offers a presence different to any other striker in Europe. He provides raw power and a ruthless eye for goal, however, he also possess a superb touch and finesse which is often a surprise for a player of his size. After a bizarre league season in 2008/09 when he scored just five goals, the Ivory Coast international has returned with a bang this term and has proved a vital weapon since the arrival of Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti last summer. It must also be remembered that Drogba has missed part of the campaign due to the African Cup of Nations and minor injuries. He might have placed Rooney well and truly in the shade if he had not been absent during the winter. Chelsea's current No.11 has become an essential cog in the machine at Stamford Bridge and this season has only served to underline that fact as the club battle for the league title, while they are also in contention to retain the FA Cup. It is now almost impossible to imagine the Blues without Drogba in their ranks as he has long been a part of the spine of the team since arriving from Marseille in 2004 for a fee of £24million. That he has perhaps not received the praise of some of his rivals this season is perhaps an indication that he has only achieved the norm for a player of his standing - scoring goals to help win trophies.
