The scout reports...
We take a close look at Holland right-back Gregroy van der Wiel, who has been impressing most onlookers in South Africa.
However, just eight years ago, not many could envisage that Van der Wiel would be playing for Holland, let alone starring at a World Cup finals.
In 2002, Van der Wiel was kicked out of Ajax's academy because of what they perceived as an attitude problem.
He was soon picked up by FC Haarlem and he rebuilt his reputation and was re-signed by Ajax in 2005, and within 12 months he was in the first-team set-up.
When making his debut Van der Wiel was also very much a central defender, this was to change in 2008 under Marco van Basten - who recognised his attacking abilities and converted him to full-back.
Van der Wiel has not looked back ever since and has made huge progress in the last two years, indeed he did not make his senior Dutch debut until February 2009, but he has wasted little time in becoming a regular.
Van der Wiel has been likened to one of his predecessors, Michael Reiziger, and it is very easy to see the likeness. Van der Wiel has wonderful pace which helps in both attack and defence.
But unlike most modern attacking full-backs, Van der Wiel's background is a defensive one, rather than being converted from a winger.
The scout says...
His performances at the finals have only enhanced his reputation and he has already been linked to just about every major club in Europe with Bacelona, Inter Milan, Arsenal and Manchester City all keeping tabs on him.
