United striker back on scoring trail

Wayne Rooney admits he was relieved to end his goal-scoring drought for Manchester United. Rooney stepped up to convert a late penalty at Ibrox to give United a 1-0 win over Rangers to seal their place in the knockout phase of the UEFA Champions League. The England international had not scored for United since August and his effort on Wednesday night was only his second goal this season. "Obviously it is a bit of a relief for me to score," Rooney admitted. "Hopefully I can build on this now. "There were not many nerves really. I knew what I was doing and where I was going. I can only do that. If the keeper guesses the right way and saves it, so be it. Thankfully it went in."

Celebrate

Rooney, making his first start after an ankle injury, is still the subject of a mixed reaction from the club's fans following his well-publicised contract dispute with the Red Devils. But now he is fully committed, having signed a new five-year deal, and he was delighted to have grabbed the winner. "I wanted to celebrate with our fans," he said. "It is always nice to beat Rangers away. "Hopefully I can go on a goal-scoring run now but really I am just delighted to be back playing again. "I felt good. I felt fit throughout the game. I want to build on this performance and this goal."
