Chelsea goalkeeper admits United's finishing was superior
Petr Cech believes the quality of Manchester United's finishing against Chelsea was the difference between the two teams at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Sir Alex Ferguson's team maintained their 100 per cent record to the start of the season with a 3-1 win over one of their main challengers for the title.
Fernando Torres showed glimpses of the type of form he demonstrated at Liverpool, with a sumptuous finish early in the second half.
But he was also guilty of a glaring miss having rounded the 'keeper and inexplicably firing wide of an empty net.
And it was that type of miss that was the difference between the two teams at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Chances
"In the first half we had three good chances to score but the half-time score was 3-0. Then we got ourselves back a bit with the beautiful Torres goal," Cech told his
official website.
"At that moment I believed we could make the match dramatic, possibly go on to equalise.
"There was almost 45 minutes remaining and we just needed to get in touch by making it 3-2. However we failed to do that despite the amount of opportunities."
Chelsea's defeat to United was a combination of their own failings, coupled with some bad fortune, debatable decisions and some fine play from Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
Adamant
Chris Smalling's early goal for the Red Devils was one that should have not have stood as replays showed he was narrowly offside, but Cech was adamant him and his team-mates would not look for excuses for their loss.
"It is true that Smalling's goal should not have counted because there was a clear offside which TV replays confirmed afterwards," he added.
"But we cannot take that as an excuse as they managed to add more goals. Nani's goal was beautiful, he hit it superbly.
"As for the third goal - the ball bounced to the feet of Rooney who had an empty net at his mercy and he does not fail in such positions."
