Stampede delays warm-up game in South Africa

Nigeria saw off North Korea 3-1 in their final World Cup warm-up match, which was disrupted by a fans stampede. The match was paused for around five minutes early in the second half due to injuries and concern over the safety of the supporters in the overcrowded main stand at the Makhulong Stadium, where the fencing had been removed. The stampede reportedly started when too many fans obtained free tickets for the game and stormed the entrance to the ground, and at least 15 people were injured. The game resumed once police had cleared the congested stand and prevented a large crowd outside from trying to enter the stadium. Nigeria had opened their lead through Yakubu Aiyegbeni in the 17th minute after a sweep of rapid passes allowed them to penetrate the Korean defence.

Penalty

Victor Obinna converted a penalty on the hour to double Nigeria's advantage, but the North Koreans replied within a minute to stay in contention. Jong Tae-se intercepted a wayward back pass from Elderson Echiejile and went on to score from close range. But the Nigerians wrapped up their win three minutes from time when substitute Obafemi Martins, fed by a superb run and cut inside from Kalu Uche, found the back of the net. Cha Jong-hyok was sent off for North Korea with 13 minutes remaining after landing a second booking. The win marked Nigeria's first under new manager Lars Lagerback after securing consecutive draws against Saudi Arabia and Colombia.
