Northampton claimed their third win in a row as they dented Exeter's play-off hopes with a 2-1 victory at Sixfields.
Goals either side of half-time from Aaron Pierre and Andy Williams did the damage as the Cobblers extended their unbeaten streak to six games.
The game took a while to get going but Exeter should have been in front midway through the first half when Matt Jay was unable to force the ball home after some desperate last-ditch defending.
However, it was Northampton who hit the front after 32 minutes as Marvin Sordell's header came back off the crossbar and dropped to Pierre, who bundled the ball over the line.
City stopper Christy Pym stood up bravely to deny Daniel Powell in first-half stoppage-time but Northampton doubled their lead in the 56th minute when Williams turned in Powell's low cross.
The visitors responded within five minutes through Aaron Martin's header after Jonathan Forte saw his effort saved, but Northampton were worthy winners.
