Jon Stead missed a second-half penalty as bottom side Notts County wasted a golden chance to claim a valuable victory in a 0-0 draw with promotion-chasing Bury.

Andy Kellett's cross was handled in the box and Stead, County's top scorer with eight goals this season, stood up - only to drive his effort over the bar.

The hosts were aggressive from the start, with both Shaun Brisley and Robert Milsom going close in the opening ten minutes before David Vaughan cracked the post from long range.

Kristian Dennis and Andy Kellett then missed gilt-edged chances before the break as County ran Bury ragged.

However, the visitors grew into the game in the second half, with Chris Stokes heading inches wide, but County quickly got back on top before Stead's penalty miss.

They maintained their intensity until the end but their wastefulness in front of goal, combined with the excellent Bury goalkeeper Joe Murphy, ensured it ended goalless - with Matt Tootle seeing a driving half-volley spectacularly palmed away in stoppage time.
