Highlights of the Carabao first round match between Oldham and Burton.

Lucas Akins' late penalty sent Burton into the second round of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win over Oldham on Wednesday.

Burton took the lead through Luke Varney after Ousmane Fane's miscued backpass, but Oldham levelled through Paul Green's free-kick.

Craig Davies' penalty then gave Oldham the lead on 67 minutes, but Matthew Lund equalised for the visitors just moments later.

Akins' 86th-minute penalty ensured Burton avoided extra time, and sent the Sky Bet Championship side into the next round.

The second-round draw will take place on Thursday evening at around 10pm, live on Sky Sports News.

Despite making eight changes to the team which started Saturday's Championship defeat against Cardiff, Burton went close to an early opener as Luke Varney's drive was saved by home keeper Ben Wilson.

Oldham's first opportunity came on 35 minutes, with Aaron Amadi-Holloway bringing a fingertip save from Burton's debutant keeper Connor Ripley.

Burton were gifted the lead after 47 minutes when Oldham midfielder Ousmane Fane played a weak back-pass and Varney intercepted before slotting past Wilson.

Oldham levelled eight minutes later as Paul Green's left-wing free-kick eluded a mass of bodies, including keeper Ripley, and bounced straight inside the far post.

The Latics then went ahead with a 67th-minute penalty, drilled into the bottom corner by Craig Davies after Ryan McLaughlin was bundled over by Ben Fox.

But there was another quick equaliser - this time within two minutes - when Burton substitute Matt Lund met Joe Sbarra's cross and swept home from 10 yards.

Albion settled an entertaining tie in the 86th minute as McLaughlin fouled Damien McCrory just inside the box and Akins stepped up to convert the decisive penalty.

Oldham could have forced extra time, only for Peter Clarke's header to hit the woodwork late on.
