Relegation battlers cancel each other out in goalless stalemate

Relegation battlers Oldham and Tranmere shared the spoils in a drab 0-0 draw at Boundary Park. Oldham narrowly shaded a match of few chances but the lowest scorers in League One once again paid for their lack of cutting edge in front of goal. Tranmere have now lost just one of their last seven games and they went close to snatching an early lead when Gareth Edds saw his volley deflected wide. Terry Gornell then fired into the arms of Dean Brill and soon after the Oldham goalkeeper dived to his left to grab a curling 25-yard free-kick from Paul McLaren. Oldham's Deane Smalley twice missed the target after finding space inside the box and his team were unlucky just after half-time when three men had shots blocked near the goalline in quick succession. Latics' top-scorer Pawel Abbott tested visiting keeper Luke Daniels before Oldham carved out by far the clearest chance of the night with 11 minutes remaining. Abbott's through ball sent Alex Marrow sprinting into the box and the midfielder seemed to have done everything right when he rounded Daniels and fired goalwards. Yet Tranmere full-back Zoumana Bakayogo got across to bundle the ball off the line and preserve Tranmere's clean sheet.
