Downes grabs only goal at Vale Park

Aaron Downes' second-half goal earned Chesterfield their first win in seven league games as they beat 10-man Port Vale 1-0 at Vale Park. The big defender, who was involved in the tangle which saw Marc Richards sent off four minutes before the break, met Darren Currie's 54th minute corner with an unstoppable header. There were plenty of chances in an open first half with Chesterfield's Jamie Ward wasting the best of them after just 30 seconds. Richards was dismissed for a moment of madness in the 41st minute when he appeared to punch Downes as the pair fell to ground. Chesterfield took charge at the start of the second half as Chris Martin made a tremendous save from Lester but 18-year-old Martin, deputising for the injured Joe Anyon, was left without a hope when Downes struck. Robertson should have extended Chesterfield's lead before Vale launched a spirited fight-back, which almost resulted in a last minute equaliser for substitute Kyle Perry.
