Preston North End cruised through the Carling Cup first round with a 5-1 win over Morecambe.
Goals galore as Morecambe crumble
Preston thrashed League Two side Morecambe 5-1 to secure a spot in the draw for the Carling Cup second round.
North End goalkeeper Andy Lonergan saved a penalty from Morecambe midfielder Mark Duffy in the 30th minute but the Coca-Cola Championship side were rarely troubled thereafter.
Chris Brown headed the hosts into the lead and Stephen Elliott doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time before Barry Nicholson, Neal Trotman and Neil Mellor netted after the break.
Brown's opener came on 33 minutes after he got on the end of a cross from the right by Michael Hart and shortly before the break Elliott rose highest to head home a cross from Ross Wallace.
Alan Irvine's men continued to dominate proceedings and they claimed a third in the 57th minute when another fine cross from Wallace was headed home by Nicholson.
Twelve minutes later, the lead was extended to four when substitute Trotman made an immediate impact by powering home a header from Nicholson's left-wing cross.
Preston added a fifth in the closing stages when Mellor rifled home a cross from Chris Sedgwick before Michael Twiss rifled in a low effort to give Morecambe a consolation late on.
